Callum Smith in Newcastle!

U13 Scottish Number 1, Callum Smith made the journey down to Newcastle to play in the England Squash Silver Event, at Northumberland Tennis and Squash Club this weekend (20th/ 21st April). Callum was joined in the draw by fellow Scots Ellis Isaacs (Bridge of Allan) and Flynn MacDonald (Inverness).

The draw was big, with 22 players in total, and Callum starting as a 3/4 seed. Callum’s first match was against Kiran Sarkar, a 13/16 seed, which Callum won in a strong 3 – 0. The second round saw another 3 – 0 win for Callum against Leo Bates.

The semi-final presented a much harder challenge for Callum, playing Ben Lamond, the 2nd seed. Having crossed paths with Ben before, Callum was still to record a win against his young adversary. However, the work that Callum has been putting in recently saw him take his first win against Ben, winning 11 – 4 in the fifth!

The final saw Callum meet young Logan Willstrop, son of two former world number 1’s, James Willstrop and Vanessa Atkinson. Callum lost the first game 9 – 11, but bounced back in the second game to win 11 – 6, levelling the match at 1 – 1. However, the earlier match against Ben started to take its toll, with Callum starting to tire in the hard rallies, allowing Logan a 3 – 1 win, and giving Callum a second place finish.

Well done Callum, the work is making a difference and there are big things to come!
